The reason that solar arrays turn off in a power outage is simple; Safety. The National Electrical Code requires photovoltaic systems to have a disconnect switch.

Disconnects will interrupt the current coming from the solar panels. When a current gets interrupted, it turns the power off. Disconnects make sure that no one will get electrocuted while fixing grid issues.

The problem is that disconnects disrupt all current coming from the solar panels. This electrical requirement for solar means that although the sun may be out, the home still won’t have power.

 Battery backup is an energy storage option often used for residential solar. With battery backup, homeowners can charge a battery with their excess solar power. If a homeowner has enough home-batteries, they can power the home when the sun is down.

Portable Backup Solar Generator

Go Solar Group sales portable battery backup from Goal Zero in addition to Tesla’s, Powerwall, home battery. We offer two Smaller battery backup options that help customers with smaller energy needs stay up and running during an outage.

In both of these options, customers have a choice between two different battery sizes. The Yeti 1400 will produce up to 1428 watts. The Yeti 3000, produces up to 3075 watts in a charge.

Portable generators weigh about 40 lbs. If customers need power brought to them, it is a great way to do it. The Yeti has several different ports so they can connect to several devices with ease.

Adding Battery Extensions to Your Battery Backup

If 3,000 watts of power isn’t enough, but a Powerwall is too much, there is another option. Customers can add Goal Zero Tanks to their Yeti

The Tank is a lead-acid backup battery that can connect to the Yeti. Each Tank adds 1,250 watts of power. 

Battery Backup For Your Home: Tesla Powerwall

Go Solar Group is also a certified tesla installer. The Tesla Powerwall can power an entire home. The Powerwall spec sheet states that the Powerwall weighs 276 lbs, and can mount on the wall or the floor.

Each battery can power up to 14,000 watts in one charge. However, if the Powerwall has continued use, it will power up to 5,000 watts between charges.

How many Powerwalls are needed depends on the power needs of the home and the priorities of the homeowner. Tesla recommends homeowners get 2 Powerwalls if they use 30 kWh per day on average and are planning on continuous use. 

30 kWh may seem small, but it is equivalent to 30,000 watts. Homeowners will need to look at their monthly usage on their power bills to determine how much power they regularly use.
